So, I just learned about this. Today learned about this, for a show going on tomorrow. The San Francisco show is sold out (unfortunately) along with New York’s but Los Angeles still has some tickets available. That might be worth the drive.
You might better know Rich Brian (or perhaps Brian Imanuel) as Rich Chigga, the man who performed “Dat $tick.” The Indonesian native recently changed his stage name and while Rich Chigga might have been, at the time, a sort of gimmick or joke, Rich Brian has definitely come into his own and transcends what he started. His first full album, “Amen,” released just a few days ago.
Joji, given name George Miller, is another person you probably know by another name. He is the man behind Filthy Frank and Pink Guy who you may have seen on Youtube and green-screened onto others as someone telling people to stop (you know the ones). His videos and music were known largely for their comedic value but with his transcendance to Joji he’s taken on a much more serious nature. From what I’ve heard I’d describe it as low-fi hip-hop, very slow, almost sludgy (in a good way), kind of like post-rock, and the perfect thing when you’ve overdosed on too much high speed metal which I tend to do a lot.
The Higher Brothers hail from China are composed of MaSiWei, DZknow, Psy.P, and Melo. As labelmates they’ve worked quite a bit alongside both Rich Brian and Joji. They’re proof that good music doesn’t require you to know what language it is sung in. The flow and the feeling crosses the barrier between China and the rest of the world. Their new EP Journey to the West released in mid-January.
